Overview
The Texas State Council Charities administers two Education Grant Programs funded by the interest earned on the Cardinal Humberto Medeiros and Christopher Trust Funds, which are managed by the Supreme Council. The two programs include:
- Catholic School Grants
- Individual Educational Grants
Catholic School Grants
The Texas State Council Charities awards $2,000 or more per diocese to designated Catholic schools. Before March 1, the Educational Grant Committee consults with each Diocese's Bishop and the Diocesan Superintendent or Director of Catholic Education to select schools and allocate the funds (minimum $500 per school). Funds are distributed to designated schools after the State Convention, with each diocese receiving at least one $2,000 grant. The total available amount is based on the number of Knights in each Diocese.
Individual Educational Grants
The Texas State Council awards at least one $1,000 Educational Grant per diocese, plus two $1,000 At-Large Educational Grants. The number of grants per diocese is determined by the number of Regular Members in each Diocese as of July 1. Applications for these grants are due by March 1, and winners are announced at the State Convention.
Eligibility for Individual Educational Grants
- The applicant must be a Knight of Columbus member in good standing in Texas or their wife, son, or daughter.
- Grandchildren may apply if their father is not a Knight or not in good standing. Descendants of deceased members in good standing are also eligible.
- Graduating seniors from Catholic high schools in Texas may apply if sponsored by a Texas Council, regardless of their family’s membership status.
Grant funds may be used for education at a University, College, Junior College, Technical School, Business School, or Seminary. Applications must be completed and received by March 1. The sponsoring Council must have all Supreme and State per capita dues paid, and it must not be suspended by the Supreme Council.
Application Guidelines
Guidelines for completing the Educational Grant Application can be found in the application itself, which is available:
The number of grants per Diocese is based on membership numbers, with one grant awarded per Diocese plus an additional grant for each increment of 7,500 Knights in the Diocese as of July 1 each year.
Application Deadline
Educational Grant applications are due by March 1 of the grant year.
A completed application also counts as an award write-up toward the Lone Star Award for Excellence with Distinction.
