On Saturday, December 6th, Del Norte Council #2592, in El Paso, celebrated the 100th Anniversary of their council. The Council was chartered on December 20, 1925 as the first Spanish speaking council in the United States.
Bishop Mark Seitz presided over mass Saturday afternoon at San Francisco Javier Church, the home parish for Coucil 2592. Worthy Past State Deputy Doug Oldmixon along with Supreme Representative Spanish Trainer, Carlos Canseco were also in attendance.
In 1923, Joseph Driscoll, who served as Grand Knight of Council #638 in El Paso was elected State Deputy of Texas. One of his most notable achievements was convincing the Order that it was appropriate to establish councils in the United States to be conducted in the Spanish language, and on December 20,1925, Del Norte Council 2592 was established as the first such council in the Knights, to be followed by many more, and continuing even more so today as a vital outreach of the Order to our Spanish speaking brothers in the Catholic faith.
Critical to the success of Del Norte Council was the inspired selection of Dr. Cleophas Callerosas a founder, charter member and Grand Knight for ten years. Dr. Calleros was then the warden of Council #638, having joined the Order as a young man after immigrating as a child from Mexico. He established in El Paso the first Circle of Columbian Squires west of the Mississippi River, and later served as District Deputy for all the Spanish speaking councils in Texas and throughout the border region all the way to the Valley.
Throughout its history, El Paso has been blessed by some great men. These were Brother Knights, inspired and sustained by their Catholic Faith. Men like Bishop Anthony Schuler, El Paso's first Bishop, Pedro de Jesus Maldonado, a Brother Knight and Priest ordained by Bishop Schuler who was martyred for ministering to the people in Chihuahua on February 11th, 1937, and later declared a saint, Brother Driscoll and Dr. Calleros. Their legacy lives on in the Diocese of El Paso.
In a gala luncheon following Mass, Supreme Representative, Carlos Canseco presented a letter and certificate recognizing the anniversary of Council #2592 on behalf of Supreme Knight, Patrick Kelly. Also, Past State Deputy Doug Oldmixon presented the Fr. McGivney Icon, commissioned in 2013 to the Council on behalf of State Deputy, Ron Alonzo.
