The Texas Knights of Columbus named the Velasco family as the "Family of the Year" for 2025 at their Annual Convention. The event took place April 25-28 at the American Bank Convention Center in Corpus Christi, recognizing John Paul (JP), Nicole, Maddie, Levi, Matthias, and John Luke Velasco as the Family of the Year!
The qualifications for Family of the Year are: Is the family tight knit? Does the family spend quality time together? Does the family attend weekly Mass together? Does the family pray together outside of Mass? Has the family made significant contributions to the parish and church community? Does the family serve as a model of Catholic family values?
John Paul, who goes by "JP," and Nicole came to St. Tereasa of Calcutta, with a willingness and determination to serve. (St. Teresa is a new parish established by Most Reverend Michael F. Olson, STD, MA, August 1, 2022. It holds its weekend Masses at Hughes Elementary School.)
JP and Nicole are key members of the St Teresa of Calcutta Church, actively participating in all events and helping the growing parish. JP serves on the Parish Financial Council as Secretary and is also part of the Advancement Committee. He serves as an usher during mass when his children allow him to do so.
JP, as Program Director of Knights of Columbus Council 18179, contributed to achieving Star Council in 2024. His recruitment efforts help the council exceed the goal by 150%. In November 2024, JP led Council 18179 Knights to provide meals for over 150 attendees at the church parish hall groundbreaking.
Nicole juggles many roles: she is a mother, serves on the Advancement Committee, and acts as Pastoral Council Secretary. She teaches Religious Education, assists with church events, and has recently welcomed a new family member, John Luke.
JP and Nicole exemplify faithfulness as Catholics amidst modern challenges. Congratulations to JP, Nicole, and the Velasco family!
